Description

Welcome to Raggamuffins, the little bistro that’s big on quality specialising in fish and seafood with a big emphasis on local fresh produce. Situated in the heart of the village of Braunton, within the Cross Tree Centre, Raggamuffins offers a wide variety of locally sourced seasonal foods.

Fresh fish is supplied daily by Passmores fishmongers of Butchers Row in Barnstaple, having been landed at Appledore Fish Market on the Taw & Torridge estuary. Beef comes from Westgate Angus Beef herd farmed at Muddiford in North Devon. Other meats and poultry are bought at a local village butchers Topside in Braunton.

Vegetables and salads are sourced from the local village shops or direct from farms in the local area. Desserts are freshly prepared daily, with plenty of homemade puddings to finish off the meal. The cheese board, although small in selection is all West country produced.

A small but varied wine list is available with the mainstream wines supplied by the independent wine shippers Charles Steevenson of Tavistock. The wine list includes a selection of very good Devon wines from the vineyards of Down St Mary near Crediton and Sharphams of Totnes.

Our most popular dishes are the selection of Fresh Fish Feasts for two people - four different fish served on a platter with vegetables & potatoes or salad. Choose from:

Main Course Only
or
Crab & Prawn starter and the main course
or
The Catch of the Day
Crab & Prawn to
Scallops & King Prawns to follow
The platter of four fish as the main

Prices start at £30.00 to £47.50 for two to share.

Raggamuffins is owned and operated by Helen and Ian Welsh, ably assisted by their daughters Marg and Lizzie, with extra help from a couple of key members of staff.
Both Helen & Ian have spent many years in the catering industry having met years ago at Harlow College in Essex, where Helen learnt her craft and skills and Ian (a true Devonian) undertook his Ships Cook’s Certificate while serving in the Merchant Navy. Prior to opening Raggamuffins, they owned Greyven House Hotel and Tea Rooms on Ilfracombe´s Sea Front for 19 years, having moved there in 1981 from the Shetland Islands where Ian was employed by BP on the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal Project, and where the family spent 4 years.

Daytime hours at the bistro finds Helen at the front of the house assisted by one of the girls, while Ian is in the back serving up the snacks and lunches. The roles are reversed in the evening with Helen in the kitchen preparing and cooking the meals and Ian is in the dining area welcoming diners and explaining what’s on the menu tonight.

Raggamuffins opened its doors in June 2001. Since then, locals and visitors have enjoyed the food, atmosphere and hospitality that has now become the norm of the bistro.

We are open for evening meals from Tuesday to Saturday, starting at 7.00pm, with last orders at 9.00pm. The coffee shop and café are open daily Monday to Saturday from 10.00am to 2.00pm for coffee, teas, light lunches and snacks. Cream teas are served daily with Helen’s freshly baked scones and cakes.

We are open all year round, except for holidays and are fully booked by local organizations from time to time, so customers should always check ahead for reservations.
