Description

The Old Mill Cottage is a thatched Devon longhouse set in eleven acres of pasture, orchard and vineyard in the heart of rural mid Devon. The cottage, which adjoins the main house, is created from a former shippon and hayloft, recently restored to a very high standard to provide stylish, self-catering accommodation for four. It enjoys complete privacy, set in its own, enclosed, sunny, south-facing garden with terrace and garden furniture - perfect for alfresco breakfasts and long, lazy suppers. The cottage has been recently restored to an exceptionally high standard and is heated by oil-fired central heating. The property has a private, filtered and treated water supply, which is tested regularly. This means that pure spring water is available from all cold taps.

The Old Mill Cottage is a grade II listed building and retains much of its original character with a wealth of exposed stone walls and beams – beware the low front door! The accommodation is perfect for couples or families with children who want that “away from it” all break with easy access to the moors and the sea (about 50 minutes drive) but only 30 minutes drive from the shops, restaurants of the lovely Cathedral City of Exeter. It is perfect both for summer holidays and for short breaks in the, usually mild, Devon autumn and winter. In spring, the countryside is especially beautiful, when every hedgerow bursts with wild flowers.

Down St Mary is a historic, pretty village in the heart of rural Devon, yet lies only seven miles from the old market town of Crediton. The area is perfect for walking, golfing, cycling, riding, fishing and bird watching. There are lots of local footpaths as well as easy access to Dartmoor and Exmoor, to the Tarka trail and the Two Moors Way. Make sure you bring your wellies, especially out of season! There is a nine-hole golf course just outside the village and fishing, riding and trekking can be found nearby. Down St Mary is about 50 minutes drive from the elegant and sedate beaches of East Devon and the surfers’ paradise of Croyde.

If you simply want to relax, you can do so in our garden, maybe reading, or listening to music in the garden room. We provide a small library of books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and board games, but please bring your own favourites. We also supply a welcome pack with local or home made produce and a complimentary bottle of Down St Mary wine.

We welcome well-behaved dogs by arrangement (conditions apply). The Old Mill Cottage has light carpets, so for this reason we ask that muddy or wet dogs be kept in the tiled hall and kitchen until they are clean and dry. Because we have dogs ourselves and know that they are dirt magnets, we provide a plentiful supply of dog towels! We kindly ask that you please use them.
